In Warwickshire North there are currently a number of General Practices which are procured through an Alternative Medical Service Contract. These contracts are time-limited, and we have four practices whose current contracts will expire on March 2020. These practices are:
- Satis House Medical Practice
- Camphill GP Led Health Centre
- The Chaucer Surgery
- Leicester Road Surgery
This means that we need to consider how general medical services will be provided when these contracts expires, to ensure that we are commissioning high quality services for our entire population, which make the best use of the resources that we have, both now and in the future.
With this in mind, there are several possible scenarios for each practice. You can find out more about the possible scenarios here.
To inform our decision we undertook a period of engagement to understand the needs of patients at the practices, and consider how the practices are currently used, the size of the patient list, and the capacity of other practices in the area to take on more patients. This included a survey, which could be responded to through either comment boxes in each GP practice reception area or online, as well as face to face engagement with local residents.
We also considered how the practices are currently used, the size of the patient list, and the capacity of other practices in the area to take on more patients.
Our goal is to make sure that we provide the right services for our entire population, which make the best use of the resources that we have. This means that we need to consider where GP services are located, how easy they are to access, and whether they are able to provide the care that patients need, both now and in the future.
Based on this, we have taken the decision to test the market to understand if there is interest from providers in delivering services on three of the four contracts. These are Satis House Medical Practice, The Chaucer Surgery and Camphill GP Led Health Centre. We are currently working with potential providers to explore the market. We have decided we will not take steps to re-procure the current contract at Leicester Road Surgery. Leicester Road Surgery has a current patient list size of 2,635 people, and this is not predicted to grow in the near future. As part of the survey conducted with patients the Surgery, the majority of patients said that they were prepared to travel for up to 10 minutes by car or on foot to reach another practice. Within the local area there are four practices within a mile and a half of Leicester Road Surgery who would be able to offer services to additional patients.
Leicester Road is one of our smallest contracts and we believe that the best use of our funding would be to support patients to find a different practice nearby, rather than re-procure the current contract.
Patients at Leicester Road Surgery will continue to receive services from the practice until March 2020. Over the next ten months the CCG will work with both the practice and the patients to ensure that they registered successfully with another practice before Leicester Road Surgery closes. All appointments and all other services will continue as normal until March 2020.
We will write to all patients at Leicester Road to inform them, let them know what they need to do next and provide contact details for the other GP practices in the area so that they can register with a new doctor.
