Maternity and paediatrics

Our vision is to work together, across Health and Social Care, to develop and deliver joined–up services commissioned for children, young people and their families. To ensure they are safe, accessible, responsive to the individual needs, promote independence and are sustainable into the future.

The CCG was involved in an engagement exercise in early 2018 to ask the views of mothers, mothers to be, families, friends, carers and frontline staff working across maternity and paediatrics

The purpose of this engagement

The purpose of this engagement was to gather the views and experiences from the following groups:
  • Mothers and mothers to be
  • Families and carers
  • Community and voluntary sector supporting families
  • Frontline staff delivering maternity and paediatric services

And to use this feedback to create an evidence base of lived experience and feedback to help inform commissioning decisions about the future of maternity and paediatric services across Coventry and Warwickshire.

Areas covered by the engagement

Throughout the engagement we asked for people’s views, thoughts, ideas and experience of the following:

  • Antenatal care
  • Birth
  • Postnatal care
  • Neonatal care
  • Community and hospital paediatric services
  • General practice services for parents to be and new parents
  • General practice services for babies, children and young people
  • Accident and emergency services

Engagement structure

Stage 1 – co-creation events with local families

  • Four events held covering Coventry, Rugby, the north and south of Warwickshire
  • Linked with local community and voluntary sector
  • Delivered the events in local communities rather than expecting them people to come to us
  • Spoke to a broad range of individuals who shared a wealth of different experiences, thoughts and ideas

Stage 2 – online survey aimed at expectant parents and parents/carers of 0-5

  • Developed in collaboration with local partners
  • Distributed through a mixture of online, face to face and via community/voluntary groups
  • Groups targeted included new parent support, teen parent groups, groups supporting those with mental health needs, faith groups, BAME groups and LGBT groups

Stage 3 – interviews with frontline staff and the community and voluntary sector

  • Gathered the views of frontline staff including midwives, health visitors, perinatal mental health support workers and more
  • Also gathered views from local community and voluntary sector staff covering a wide range of areas, such as mental health, teen parents, victims of abuse, traveller communities, asylum seekers and the vulnerably housed

Through this approach, over 600 + people were given the opportunity to have their say about maternity and paediatric services. The engagement was received very positively, with participants grateful for the opportunity to share their views and hugely supportive of the work.
